New Year's Eve outfits, styled my way

For a New Year's Eve outfit, I would start with a dress that holds its shape or separates that let you choose your own proportions. My edit brings together draped dresses, a jacket dress and lace-trimmed pieces, with room to make the final look your own. I would choose around the evening you have planned, then try the complete outfit with the shoes you intend to wear.

A draped dress for dinner

The Nilo Dress 2.0 Acqua Gold is my starting point for an evening built around dinner. Its shoulder pads give the top a defined line, while the clipped button waist gathers the drape. At the back, adjustable ties sit across the shoulders above an open, flowing shape. The fabric combines polyester and viscose with lurex.

I would let that drape remain the centre of the outfit. A small bag and a simple sandal give the dress space, particularly around the back and shoulders. When trying it on, I would adjust the ties before deciding how the waist should sit. Sit down as well as standing in front of the mirror: a dinner outfit needs to feel right at the table. Bring the underwear you plan to wear so you can see how it works with the open back.

Royal red with a strong shoulder

The JG Jacket Dress Royal Red offers a different starting point. It has an oversized, double-breasted shape, padded shoulders and a mini length when worn closed as a dress. The product description identifies the fabric as bamboo silk. I would wear it fully buttoned and let the shoulder line carry the look.

I would keep jewellery away from the lapels and try a small earring first. The proportions matter here: look at the jacket from the side, check the overlap while seated and make sure the length works for your plans. If you prefer wearing it open, build an outfit underneath before deciding on the size. The same piece can work as a layer, but the way you wear it changes the fit you may want through the body. Try those options with the team before choosing.

A lace-trimmed mini for a night out

The Rio Mini Dress Red with Orange Lace has a bias-cut slip shape, lace at the neckline and hem, and small front slits. Its open lace-up back lets you adjust the fit through the upper body. The fabric is a silk and polyester blend, with a fluid drape.

I would keep the rest of this outfit spare. Try a sandal with a strap arrangement that feels secure when you walk, then choose a bag you can comfortably carry through the evening. With a mini dress, I would check the hem both standing and seated. Adjust the back lacing gradually so the front sits as you want it to. The neckline already has its own detail; I would try it without a necklace before adding anything. This is a useful way to decide whether an accessory adds to the outfit or simply competes with it.

A corset with a long skirt

For a more structured outfit, I would put the Femme Fatale Corset 2.0 Black with the La Luna Mermaid Skirt Black. The corset has heavy boning and a zip closure. The long skirt has a high V-shaped waist and ruching down the front. Both product descriptions identify bamboo silk.

I would try the pieces together to see where the two waistlines meet. Keep the corset sitting where it is intended to sit, then adjust the skirt around that point. The product page advises sizing up in the corset, so I would start with a fit conversation rather than assume your usual size. Optional sleeves are a separate choice. Check which version you are ordering before deciding on the final look. With the long skirt, take your intended shoes to the fitting and check the hem while walking.

Separates with flared sleeves

The Rio Cropped Top Pink with Red Lace and Rio Mini Skirt Pink with Red Lace make another proposed pairing. The top has long, flared sleeves and lace trim. The skirt has a front slit. Each description lists a silk and polyester blend.

I would start by checking the distance between the cropped top and the skirt waistband. Move your arms and sit down before settling on the fit. Because the sleeves are a feature, I would choose a small bag that does not catch against them. These are separate products, so you can select the fit of each piece individually. The pieces also give you options beyond this evening: try the top with a longer skirt from your wardrobe, or the mini with a simple top you already own.
